"Lord, give us leaders such that it would be to Your glory to give us the victory through them." -- Derek Prince

In our prayers for the upcoming elections in the watch, I began to cry out for several weeks, “Lord. How do we pray?” And a few weeks ago, the words of our spiritual father Derek Prince came to me.

Derek was an adopted American citizen and loved this nation dearly. In fact, He is a father of the revival of prayer for this nation, shaping a generation that began to rediscover the ancient paths of prayer, fasting and intercession through his books and teachings. I remembered a story that Derek told us from when he served in the British army during the longest British retreat in history. He was stationed in the Sudan and Rommel was on the verge of completely breaking through the last line of defense and the gateway to the Middle East. If he had succeeded the entire history of the world would be different today. Derek observed first hand the sorry state of the British troops: the soldiers were in disarray, drunken officers used precious supplies for their own needs while men didn’t even have enough water in their canteens in the hot desert. This was the front line the whole world was depending on to hold back Hitler’s dark forces.

Derek had recently been saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit. He began to set aside one day a week to fast for the troops, and he asked, “God how do I pray.” The Lord spoke to him and gave him this prayer: “Lord, give us leaders such that it would be to your glory to give us the victory through them.” That is a Holy Ghost prayer! Derek said he began to pray that prayer faithfully every day for the British troops. Some weeks later he said a tremor and a chill went through his body when he heard on his radio a report that the man the British High Command had chosen to try and avert further retreat was instantly killed when his plane touched down, clipped its wing on the tarmac and crashed upon his arrival to the African front. The British High command was in a panic to find a replacement and the door opened for Winston Churchill to appoint a man of his own choosing —a little known general named B. L. Montgomery. Montgomery was a God-fearing son of an Anglican Bishop. As soon as he arrived at the front he began to restore order and discipline in his men. Within weeks the British had won the Battle of El-Alamein, ending an 800 mile retreat and putting the Allies back on the offensive against the Germany troops. A few days after the battle, Derek heard the description of what happened on the brink of that famous battle: Montgomery publicly called all of the officers and men to prayer saying, “Let us ask the Lord, mighty in battle, to give us the victory.” As these words filled the desert air around Derek, he heard the Lord speak ever so clearly, “That is the answer to your prayer.”

God is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is still intimately involved in the affairs of men and entire nations. We are instructed by the Apostle Paul to devote ourselves to prayer, “First of all that supplications, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:1-3). We have an invitation to change the history of nations as we devote ourselves to prayer. God has one mission, and that is that this gospel will go to the ends of the earth and then the end will come. He has appointed the nation in which you would dwell because you are an ambassador of His glory and a point of contact for His government to be established within the specific boundaries in which you live. Let us each take hold of the mission which He has given His Church, and let us devote ourselves to specific daily prayer for our nation, its government, its institutions, its leaders and its influencers.

Join us every Monday until the November elections as we set aside this day to fast and pray for the man of God’s choosing to be the next leader of the United States of America. We also pray for the House and Senate elections that God will raise up the righteous and tear down the wicked. There is a fierce battle waging to determine the direction and culture of our nation in the coming years. We are praying not only for the administration that will be in power for the next four years, but for the shift in our courts that could influence the nation for generations depending on the outcome of the presidential and congressional elections. We are in a battle, but we are Storm Warriors because the glorious One who reigns from heaven reigns in our hearts.

“Lord, give us leaders such that it would be to Your glory to give us the victory through them.”
