At the invitation of STRONGARM Ministries, Zion College students joined volunteers from over 25 churches in the Charlotte area to pitch tents, cut hair and minister as altar workers at a community outreach that offered practical assistance and the gospel of Jesus Christ in a fun and festive atmosphere. The event offered residents of various communities in need the opportunity for free career counseling, job interviews, makeovers, hair cuts, bike repairs, face painting, a hot lunch and needed items such as new shoes and groceries. All the while entertainment was ongoing and prizes such as new bikes and IPODs were given away. Most importantly, the gospel was preached and hundreds of men, women and children came forward to receive Jesus and the baptism of power through the Holy Spirit.
During the gospel message, the sovereign presence of the Lord came down in our midst. Our students and the hundred of other volunteer altar workers were there in the crowd to personally minister to the newly saved. We saw children filled with the Holy Spirit and hearts transformed as they shared their prayer needs. Many of the children we ministered to asked that we pray for their hearts to be healed and that the Lord would give them a new attitude. Another young man came with an injured leg and experienced the miracle-working power of God as we prayed and his pain disappeared. We also were there to help collect contact information for follow-up by local churches and to give away free Bibles. This experience for our students was an awesome testimony of what having a serving heart coupled with a passion for the lost can do.
The WOW JAM events are an outreach of WOW (Winning Our World) International, run by Steve and Linda Tavani of Pastor Jack Hayford's church in California. Over 300 such events in over 40 cities with over 350,000 souls saved have been held since 2002. The Veterans Park event was part of a week-long series of WOW JAMS in the Charlotte area that culminated with a baptism service in a local lake for all the new believers on August 5th. Over 1200 souls were saved in this year's Charlotte events.
