Daily Meditations for Holy Week:

Day 1—The Entrance of the Light of the World
Sunday

The Triumphal Entry

Matthew 21

Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethpage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.” All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

“Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘ Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘ Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!”

And when He had come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” So the multitudes said, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”

The ancient liturgy of the church begins Passion Week with the joyous procession of Palm Sunday and culminates in the triumph of the resurrection. The crux of these two events is Jesus death on the cross as the atoning spectacle of God’s love and truth creating all things new. Our prayer for you is that as we make this spiritual journey of celebrating our salvation this week you will enter a new dimension of personal faith experience.

When Solomon was crowned king in 1 Kings 1:33-40 he rode into Jerusalem on David’s mule. The whole city was in an uproarious rejoicing at his coming. As the son of David was anointed to reign even his enemies ran to lay hold of the horns of the altar and make peace with him. Jesus Christ is the true Son of David promised in Abraham. Christ has come into our hearts in the same manner He entered into Jerusalem with His disciples two thousand years ago. We see Him as He is: both King and Lord over all creation. We shout, “Hosanna!” Salvation has come. “Blessed is He who comes!” We fling wide the doors of our hearts and invite the Presence of the Lord to cleanse this temple by His blood.

We step into new beginning in our faith and devotion as we invite the Holy Spirit to anoint us and give us light in this hour. On the first day of His creation of the world the Spirit of God hovered over the darkness and God said, “Let there be Light.” We pray, “Lord, shine in our darkness and make us lights in the world.” Amen.

Our first meditation is from Psalm 24:

     A Psalm of David.

1 The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.
2 For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters.
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive blessing from the LORD, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Your face. Selah
7 Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah
